A card archetype is a category of card that appears in the Villain or Fate deck of multiple Villains, but is not associated with a particular card type, and is not officially called out in the rules. It is more of an informal trend, but one that can be helpful in describing how the cards of different Villains compare to each other.
As card archetypes are not a codified part of the game, no list of them can be fully comprehensive, but the following are some of the more common:
- Archer: An Ally that can be used in Vanquish actions at adjacent locations. Named for Wolf Archers.
- Brute: An Ally or Hero with a Strength value, but no additional Ability. Named for Pirate Brute.
- Invincible: An Ally that is not discarded when used in a Vanquish action.
- Scavenger: A card that interacts with a discard pile.
- Scryer: A card that reveals cards from a deck until a specific card or card type is revealed. Named for Scrying.
- Taunter: A Hero that must be defeated before other Heroes. Named for Taunt, an Item that grants this function to a Hero it is attached to.
- Trophy: A card required for a Villain to win, being specifically called out in the Objective or Villain Guide, but usually serving no other function.
